Lighting System Mimicking Blue Skies

Replicates the blue sky and sunset with LED light.
Highly natural light makes indoor spaces feel larger and more open.

Overview

illustration: Lighting System Mimicking Blue Skies

We have developed an indoor lighting technology that produces natural light with depth and colors similar to a real sky. It is based on an original lighting structure that is less than 100mm thick while combining a thin blue sky panel that uses an edge-lit method to emit LED light from the sides of the panel and frames that generate sunny light.

Demonstration video of the lighting system:The daily transition of natural light is replicated, from sunrise to blue sky to sunset.

Technology Point

Mimics the Rayleigh scattering effect that makes the sky appear blue

In the real sky, sunlight is scattered by atmospheric air molecules. Short-wavelength blue light is scattered more strongly than long-wavelength red light, making the sky appear blue when viewed from below.

The developed lighting system mimics the sky’s Rayleigh scattering effect*1 by combining LED light sources that correspond to the sun and light scatterer that corresponds to atmospheric air molecules.

Thin package achieved by the edge-lit method

The conventional method requires an adequate distance between the LED light source and light scatterer to obtain a uniform blue sky color, so the lighting system necessarily becomes thick.

The edge-lit method emits LED light from the sides of the panel and allows for a thin structure that measures less than 100mm, for wide-ranging applications in offices and public facilities.

Also replicates the colors of sunrises and sunsets

LED light source colors are automatically controlled throughout the day to replicate the daily transition of natural light, from sunrise to midday sunlight to sunset.

During the daytime, the white LED is turned on and the orange LED is turned off. In the morning and evening, the orange LED is turned on while also keeping the white LED turned on weakly.

For more comfortable indoor spaces

This technology is ideal for offices, public facilities, underground spaces and other environments where natural light is limited or unavailable.

It provides pleasant light that mimics natural light like no conventional LED lighting system can, and creates comfortable indoor spaces that provide a more natural and open feeling.
